It is a legal requirement to contact every household to:
- check whether we have the correct people registered to vote
- ask residents to inform us of any changes
We are now contacting households to collect this information.
What you need to do
You must read all communications related to the annual canvass and respond as soon as possible. Instructions will be provided where we need you to provide a response.
How we will contact you
If we have an email address for a voter in a household, we will email them in July. The email will include a link where you can check and confirm the information for your address online.
If we have an email address for more than one person in the household, we will send an email to each person. Only one person will need to respond.
The email will include codes and a link where you can check and confirm your information using the codes provided.
Emails from us will be sent from:
electoral.services.london.borough.of.croydon@notifications.service.gov.uk.
Do not respond to emails from any other source.
Phone
If we have not yet received response from the property by the end of July and we have a phone number for a voter in the household we may telephone.
We will only ask people to confirm:
- whether the people who are already on the register should remain registered
- the names and nationalities of any residents who are over 16 and are not yet registered to vote.
We will not ask for any other information.
Post
Letters will be sent to all residential addresses in July and August. The type of the letters will depend on whether we have been able to successfully match electoral registration records against other records held by Croydon Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
Canvass Communication A (CCA)
This letter is sent when the details of all the voters in a household match against other records. If any information has changed, then you need to let us know. You do not need to respond to this letter if there is no change.
Canvass form
This letter is sent when we have not been able to match the details of all the voters in a household against other records. You will need to respond to this letter and update your details.
Canvass Communication B (CCB)
This letter is sent when we have not been able to match the details of all the voters in a household against our records. You will need to respond to this letter and update your details.
How to respond
You can respond to Canvass Communication A and Canvass Communication B in the following ways:
- online
- by phone
- by text
Details how to respond online, by phone or by text will be included on the communications.
You can also complete and return the canvass form by post.
Visiting the property in person
In October and November, Electoral Registration Canvassers will visit addresses that haven’t yet responded. They will assist residents to complete their form.
Legal requirement
It is a legal requirement for residents to confirm details relating to their property. If you do not provide this information you may be fined £1,000.
If someone lives at the property but is not listed on the form
Anyone not listed who lives at the property needs to be included in the response to update the register. They should also register to vote at gov.uk/register-to-vote.
