Right to buy council scheme

If you are a secure tenant, you may be entitled to buy your home through the Right to Buy scheme.

You may be entitled to a discount to enable you to buy your home for less than the open market value.

Whether your home is a house or a flat, the current maximum discount is up to £136,400 pounds. Following the government's review of Right to Buy discounts, maximum discounts will be reduced to £16,000 from 21 November 2024.

Applications  

Right to Buy applications received before 21 November 2024 from eligible tenants qualify for the current maximum discount of £136,400 pounds. 

Applications received on or after 21 November 2024 will only be eligible for the reduced maximum discount of £16,000 pounds.

Online applications

Online applications made after midnight on 20 November 2024 will only be eligible for the reduced maximum discount of £16,000 pounds.  

Postal applications

We will need to receive your application by no later than 5pm, 20 November 2024. Otherwise, your application will only be eligible for the reduced maximum discount of £16,000 pounds.

Eligibility

You may be able to buy your home if:

• it is your only or main home
• it is self-contained
• you are a secure tenant
• you have had a public sector landlord (such as a council, housing association or NHS trust) for 3 years (it doesn't have to be 3 years in a row)

You can share the right to buy with up to three family members who are not joint tenants - as long as they have all lived with you for at least 12 months prior to submitting the right to buy application.

Tenants of certain housing associations may also be able to buy their homes through the right to buy scheme - they should contact their housing association for further information.
