History

Foxes Wood is a small area of woodland beside Shirley Church Road and extends behind a small cottage that was built in 1923 in a hollow.   The wood and cottage (called Ferndale) was acquired in 1934 from The Addington Golf Syndicate.

The area is shown on the 1868 Ordnance Survey plan with a depression in the middle and a track leading from the road towards it. This is probably where sand was extracted from the area in the 19th century.
