Electric vehicle (EV) charging points

We are committed to providing more electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints across the borough.

Using EV chargepoints

How to pay

Payments are typically made using a dedicate app or charge card, or a debit or credit card. You can also use third-party apps like ZapMap and Electroverse.

Charging costs

Public charging is generally more expensive than home charging due to higher infrastructure, maintenance, and operational costs. Public EV charging is also subject to 20% VAT, whereas home electricity usage typically incurs only 5% VAT.

Rates depend on the charging network and speed of the charger. Typically this will range from around 30p to 50p per kWh for standard and fast chargepoints. Rapid chargepoints may cost more. It's best to check specific pricing via the operator's app or website before using a charger.

You do not have to pay for parking when you are parked in a marked 'EV only' bay on the street in Croydon. You can leave your vehicle while it is charging, but it does need to be plugged in, otherwise you might be issued with a penalty charge notice.

Free chargepoints

Some locations, like supermarkets, may offer free charging while you shop.

Reporting out of order chargepoints

You can report faulty chargepoints via the operator’s app or the customer service line provided at the chargepoint.

Charging restrictions

Many chargepoints have time limits, especially fast and rapid chargepoints. Be sure to check the signage for any restrictions. All on-street public chargepoints have a dedicated bay, meaning that only EVs plugged in and charging are allowed to use that space.

You can use slower chargepoints in residential areas overnight but be mindful of time limits and the specific parking rules.
