This ambitious council-led project aims to re-establish the Minster’s role as the historic core of Croydon through the redesign of the surrounding public realm and parks.
The area surrounding the Croydon Minster is of historical importance as Croydon’s place of origin. Croydon’s association with the Archbishop of Canterbury over nine centuries has shaped the identity of the area and left an enduring physical legacy, principally in the quality of its historic buildings.
While the Minster is one of the borough's few Grade I listed buildings, the surrounding public realm is of poor quality. The two green areas on either side, Minster green and St. John's Memorial Gardens, are underused and neglected.
The project aims to:
A high-quality design and successful delivery of the project will help the Minster become an important destination, rich in historic value, where people will gather to contemplate, play or relax.
This project is one of number of public realm improvements funded as part of the town centre redevelopment. The projects are supporting major development in the town centre and are helping to create a more attractive and vibrant place for people to enjoy.
Thank you to all who attended the public exhibitions during March 2019. Feedback received will be used to develop the plans including the design of the play areas and gateways into the space. Proposals will then go through the relevant planning process with the council’s planning team and the diocese. It is hoped that works will start on site in 2020.
