Support in school settings

Choosing the right school for your child can feel like a big decision. For children with SEND, you will need to take into account whether or not your child has an education, health and care (EHC) plan when choosing a school.

How to receive support 

If you are a parent, carer, or work in a school setting, find out how you can make a referral for a child or young person that needs SEND support. Alternatively, you can contact the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team to find out more information on school options.

Types of support in schools

There are a number of ways a child or family can receive SEND support within schools settings or when homeschooling. These include:

  • mainstream school funding – where children can receive extra help to overcome difficulties
  • Enhanced Learning Provisions (ELP) – provides specialist provisions for specific types of special needs as part of a mainstream school
  • special schools – provides primary, secondary and post-16 provision for pupils with SEND support
  • Springboard tuition service – provides personalised teaching for children and young people who temporarily not able to access full time mainstream teaching
  • Elective Home Education – you can choose to educate your children or young people with SEN at home. Croydon Local Authority (LA) will visit to see if the education you offer is suitable.
