If you do not bring the required documents, your notice appointment will not go ahead. You will have to book another appointment and pay the fee again. 

You must bring originals of your documents.

Your marriage or civil partnership venue

You must bring the name and address of your marriage or civil partnership venue.

Proof of your nationality and identity

You must bring a valid passport.

If you are British or Irish and you do not have a valid passport

If you were born before 1 January 1983

You must bring your birth certificate and a valid photo ID, such as a driving licence.

If you were born on or after 1 January 1983 

You must bring your birth certificate, a valid photo ID, such as a driving licence and either your:

  • mother's birth certificate
  • father's birth certificate and marriage certificate, if your parents were married to each other when you were born 

If you were born on or after 1 July 2006 

You must bring your birth certificate, a valid photo ID, such as a driving licence and either your:

  • mother's birth certificate
  • father's birth certificate 

If your parents were born outside the UK, then you must provide evidence of your parent's British nationality at the time of your birth.

If you are from the EU, EEA or have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme

You must also bring confirmation of either:  

  • your settled or pre-settled status – you need to bring a 'share code' which you can get from the 'view and prove your immigration status' service (the code will be valid for 30 days)  
  • an application to the EU Settlement Scheme you made on or before 30 June 2021, which you're waiting for a decision on – you'll need to bring your certificate of application 

If you are a foreign national

You must bring:  

  • a passport-sized photo for each of you (even if only one of you is a foreign national)  
  • proof of your current immigration status (such as a share code or your visa)  
  • a translation of any documents that are not in English
  • a completed Church of England (COE) approval form, if you wish to marry in a Church of England

Proof of your home address  

You must bring one of the following:  

  • valid UK or Irish driving licence  
  • gas, water or electricity bill from the last 3 months  
  • bank or building society statement from the last month  
  • Council Tax bill from the last 12 months  
  • mortgage statement from the last 12 months  
  • current tenancy agreement
  • letter from your landlord (dated within the last 7 days) confirming you live there and including your landlord's name, address and their signature

If you have changed your name  

You must also bring one of the following:

  • change of name deed, also known as a deed poll  
  • previous marriage or civil partnership certificate

If you have been married or in a civil partnership before

You must also bring one of the following:

  • a decree absolute or final order
  • your former partner’s death certificate and your marriage or civil partnership certificate

If you need us to check any foreign divorce papers

It costs £83 for us to check any foreign divorce papers. You need to pay this at your notice appointment by debit or credit card.

You should give notice 3 months before the date of your wedding or civil partnership for the checks to be completed.
