The Bishop of Croydon, The Rt Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett, has kindly consented to be The Civic Mayor’s Chaplain for 2026 to 2027. "I am deeply honoured to serve as the Civic Mayor of Croydon, representing our diverse and vibrant community with dedication, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service.
I was born in Ipswich and moved to Croydon in 1980, where I have proudly called home for over four decades. My educational journey began right here in Croydon where I attended Howard Primary School, Ashburton High School, and Croydon College, which helped shape my passion for learning, leadership, and community service.
For the past 22 years, my family and I have lived in Selhurst, a community that we deeply care about. I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of my wife, Farhana Islam, who stands by me in my community work. Together, we have built a strong family, raised four children and cherished the joy of being grandparents to two wonderful grandchildren.
I am also a very passionate and dedicated Approved Driving Instructor, committed to teaching learner drivers not just to pass their test but to develop the skills for safe driving for life. Helping people build confidence on the road and ensuring they drive responsibly is something I take great pride in.
Beyond my public service, I am a passionate supporter of Crystal Palace FC and a proud season ticket holder. Supporting my local club is not just a hobby but a reflection of my love for this community and its spirit.
I have always been passionate about supporting charities because they help those in need. In 2001, I ran the Flora London Marathon to fundraise for a charity organisation, a cause very close to my heart. Whether it’s through fundraising or volunteering, I believe in giving back and making a difference in people’s lives.
I am a founding member of a voluntary organisation called the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon (BBSC), where we provide educational support for youngsters, health and wellbeing classes, citizens’ advisory services, cultural programs, and community activities. Our goal is to empower the local community, promote inclusivity, and offer vital support to those who need it most.
Additionally, I am a regular NHS Blood Donor donating blood feels amazing, knowing that each donation can save lives. Giving blood is one of the most selfless things we can do, and I encourage others to take part in this lifesaving act.
Throughout my years as a Councillor for Selhurst Ward, I have worked tirelessly to support residents, address community concerns, and champion local initiatives that improve our borough. As Labour Group Chair, Vice Chair of Licensing, and Vice Chair of the Streets & Environment Sub-Committee, I have taken an active role in shaping policies that benefit our community.
As Civic Mayor, my priority is to uphold the values of inclusivity, respect, and unity across Croydon. I will continue to work closely with residents, community groups, and local organisations to ensure that every voice is heard, and that Croydon remains a great place to live, work, and thrive.
I am proud to represent our borough, celebrate our diverse communities, and promote Croydon as a place of opportunity and progress."
"I am proud to serve as Deputy Civic Mayor and to represent Croydon’s diverse and dynamic communities with commitment, respect, and a strong sense of public service.
I have served as a councillor representing residents with a strong focus on community engagement, environmental improvement, and public service.
I am passionate about supporting local communities and have worked closely with friends groups, residents’ associations, community organisations, and volunteers across Croydon to help improve neighbourhoods, protect green spaces, and strengthen community involvement. I am committed to bringing people together and ensuring that residents’ voices are heard on the issues that matter most to them.
Prior to serving as Deputy Civic Mayor, I held the position of Cabinet Member for Streets and Environment, where I worked on a range of issues including transport, sustainability, environmental services, and public realm improvements across the borough.
Before entering local government, I worked in Parliament as a Senior Caseworker for Members of Parliament and also held executive support roles within national organisations, gaining extensive experience in public affairs, governance, and stakeholder engagement.
As Deputy Civic Mayor, I am honoured to represent Croydon’s diverse communities and to support civic life across the borough."
