Overview

Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing over 200 health conditions.

These include:

  • mental health
  • heart disease
  • liver cirrhosis
  • cancer

Approximately 1 in 6 of Croydon’s adult population (over 50,000 adults) is drinking at increasing risk levels.

Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week. That is roughly 6 pints of 4% alcohol beers per week, or 6 small glasses of wine, where a small glass is 175ml of 13% alcohol wine.

Tips to help manage your drinking

You should not drink if:

  • you are pregnant
  • you are under the age of 18

Keep your short-term health risks low by:

  • limiting the total amount of alcohol you drink in one session
  • having regular drink free days
  • drinking more slowly, alternating with food, soft drinks, or water

If you drink as much as 14 units a week, spread your drinking over three days or more.
