How Healthy School Streets work

Healthy School Streets can be introduced on roads that have an entrance to a school on them, if they get a lot of traffic at pick-up and drop-off times.

The restriction means that vehicles can not enter the street at these times, normally between the hours of 08:00 to 09:30 and 14:00 to 16:00 on weekdays. Restrictions are only enforced during school term time.

Vehicles which are already parked on the street can still drive on it.

Exceptions

Residents and emergency vehicles can still enter Healthy School Streets at any time.

Signs

There will be a sign at the entrance to the School Street explaining the restrictions and when they are in place.

Avoiding a School Street during restricted times

The start and end points for the restrictions are normally set at junctions that will give drivers an opportunity to select an alternative route and avoid forcing people to make u-turns.

Where this is not possible, an advanced warning sign is set back at the nearest junction.

Consultation

People living in the area will be asked about their first-hand experiences and views, before the layout options are finalised and a School Street is implemented.

Wider initiatives

School Streets are part of a programme of initiatives used by Croydon Council's School Travel Planners to help improve road usage on journeys to school. This also includes TfL STARS and Living Street’s WOW Travel Tracker.
