Community Micro-Enterprises

Community Micro-Enterprises (CM-Es) are small local businesses, typically with 8 or fewer full-time employees or volunteers, offering community-based care and support services. They support residents to keep well, remain independent and stay connected to their local community.

Croydon's CM-E Project (CM-EP)

We are working to deliver the CM-EP, developing a market and an accessible directory to increase choice and control for residents.

The aim of the project is to provide the means for residents to use innovative and creative ways to maintain a good quality of life. For those receiving direct payments from the Council, this will increase the range of opportunities to meet their needs, outlined in their care and support plan.

Benefits to residents

CM-Es provide residents with choice and control in how they receive care and support, enabling them to access:

  • creative ways to use a Direct Payment
  • tailored support in their own homes
  • support and help around the home or garden
  • support to keep well, socialise and maintain independence

Examples of CM-E services include:

  • holistic or alternative therapies
  • transport services and shopping
  • walking, singing, dancing and exercise groups
  • hobbies, crafts and other interests
  • help in and around the home
  • support to access employment, education and volunteering opportunities

Who can use a CM-E 

Any resident can access a CM-E. You can pay for services yourself, through your Direct Payment, or your personal health budget.

When using a CM-E, you will not be an employer or have employer responsibilities. You will pay the provider directly for a service based on mutually agreed terms, conditions and fees.
