Landlord licensing
We do not currently have a licensing scheme for privately rented properties, apart from mandatory houses in multiple occupation (HMO) licensing. However, on 1 September 2026, two new schemes will come into force in Croydon:
- Selective Licensing Scheme for single family properties
- Additional HMO Licensing Scheme for smaller Houses in Multiple Occupation (AHMO)
From this date, it will be a legal requirement for a landlord to hold a selective or additional HMO licence for any qualifying property in the designated areas, in addition to the current requirement to licence mandatory HMO.
More information for landlords on how to apply will be made available in July 2026.
