We want to support people living in privately rented homes in Croydon. Around 1 in 4 Croydon residents are private renters and many are living with unacceptable conditions such as poorly maintained or unsafe housing.
During the summer 2024, we conducted a small borough-wide survey to help us to understand private renting in Croydon. Properties were surveyed from July to September 2024.
The surveys were completed by independent surveyors from a private company, the John Rowan Partnership. The Surveyor visited privately rented homes to record information on building safety, hazards and whether it meets the current Decent Homes standard. If the survey identified a significant failing we agreed we would make contact with the tenant and then the landlord or property agent so that they are aware and can arrange for the matter to be rectified.
The Decent Homes Standard is a regulatory standard in the social rented sector. The Renters (Reform) Bill recommends this standard is applied to private rented homes and formed part of the July 2024 King’s Speech. The Bill is currently passing through Parliament. To find out more about this please visit The UK Parliament website.
During the three month inspecting period all Croydon privately renting tenants were able to request a survey. Whilst we recommended that you inform you landlord this was not a requirement. The last survey took place on Friday 20th September 2024.
We are now contacting those tenants where a significant hazard was found.
