The Dingwall Road and Lansdowne Road are part of the East Croydon area and a major transport interchange in Croydon town centre.  As outlined in the East Croydon Masterplan, substantial development, improved transport links, and public realm improvements are expected to deliver major change.

The council wishes to make permanent the protected cycle lanes on Dingwall Road and Lansdowne Road and make further improvements to improve the public realm, pedestrian and taxi facilities.  This project is being funded by the Department for Transport Active Travel Funding which is administered by Transport for London.

Update on improvements – April 2023

Under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, we are letting you know that the 6-month statutory objection period for the Dingwall Road/Lansdowne Road Left Turn ETMO will start on 3 April 2023. If you have any comments, suggestions, or ideas on the changes, you can tell us by completing the online survey. This survey will close on 3 October 2023.

The council has made permanent changes to Dingwall Road and Lansdowne Road, with the following work complete or on site:

• Providing mandatory ‘with traffic’ and ‘contraflow’ cycle lanes to Lansdowne Road Dingwall Road (north) and Sydenham Road to provide protected safe space for cyclists, helping people chose to cycle.
• Providing a mandatory bidirectional cycle lane to Dingwall Road (south) to provide protected safe space for cyclists, helping people chose to cycle.
• One way working arrangements eastbound in Lansdowne Road (west), westbound on Lansdowne Road (east), southbound on Dingwall Road (south) and northbound on Dingwall Road (north) to provide access for buses, deliveries and private motor vehicles.
• Creating more space for pedestrians including providing new public space at the former Lansdowne Road / Dingwall Road junction, and new zebra crossings to make walking in the town centre safer and more convenient. This will encourage people to choose to walk and the new crossings make these streets easier to cross.
• Associated changes to parking, waiting and loading to accommodate the above changes and to improve and extend taxi facilities.

As part of our improvements to Dingwall Road, Croydon, we are making a further change to the road layout to improve access for taxis and buses.

• Allowing a left turn movement for authorised vehicles, from Lansdowne Road (east arm) into Dingwall Road, heading south towards George Street as part of an Experimental Traffic Management Order (ETMO).

Further proposals

The council’s further proposals are to introduce other permanent changes to Dingwall Road, George Street and Lansdowne Road, including:

• A new signal-controlled cycle movements into George Street and Dingwall Road to provide a safer crossing of the road for cyclists, helping people chose to cycle.
• Public realm enhancements (including paving, tree planting, seating, lighting and rain gardens).  This will help people enjoy the town centre by making it more attractive, providing shade and shelter, and places to stop, rest and enjoy.

Bus routes

The project proposals do not alter the bus routes in the area.
