London Road Corridor

London Road is a major transport corridor into Croydon town centre from the north of the Borough. Substantial development, improved transport links, and public realm improvements are expected to deliver major change.

Following Traffic Management Advisory Committee on 12 January 2022, the Council is making permanent protected cycle lanes on the High Street, and Mint Walk, Croydon, improving pedestrian facilities pedestrian and making further improvements to the public realm.   This project is being funded by the Department for Transport Active Travel Funding which is administered by Transport for London.

Proposals

The Council’s proposals are to introduce permanent changes to the London Road Corridor between Thornton Heath Pond and North End, including:

  • Converting existing advisory cycle lanes to create protected mandatory cycle lanes and increasing mandatory cycle lane provision and extending cycle lane provision to create space for cyclists at traffic light junctions all to create space for cyclists at junctions to provide protected safe space for cyclists, helping people chose to cycle.
  • Creating more space for pedestrians including increased footway space and improved crossings.  . This will encourage people to choose to walk and the new crossings make these streets easier to cross.
  • Public realm enhancements (including paving, tree planting, seating, lighting and rain gardens).  This will help improve people’s experience of the local area by making it more attractive, providing shade and shelter, and places to stop, rest and enjoy.  
  • Associated changes to parking, waiting and loading to accommodate the above changes.  
  • 20mph speed limit on the A235 London Road between Thornton Heath Pond and North End to improve road safety.

Parking, waiting and loading

Proposed new parking and loading bays are to be added to side roads to assist businesses as follows:

  • Two bays on the southeast side of Duheved Rd North Two bays, one either side of Stanley Rd Two bays on the northwest side of Midhurst Ave
  • Two bays on the southeast side of Greenside Rd Two bays either side of Broad Green Ave
  • Three bays, one on the northwest and two on southeast side of Pemdevon Rd.

Single yellow lines are to be upgraded to double yellow along full length of the proposed scheme along London Road. 

Bus routes

The project proposals do not alter the bus routes in the area.   

Business Low Emission Neighbourhood

Croydon Council have secured funding from the Greater London Authority for air quality initiatives along the London Road.  .

The London Road Business Low Emissions Neighbourhood (BLEN) is located in the area from Thornton Heath Pond to West Croydon Station.  The BLEN aims to improve the environment and improve air quality 

A series of projects are proposed which include:  

  • Urban Greening
  • Action on Idling Vehicles
  • Working with Local Businesses and the Community on Air Quality Improvements
