High Street, Croydon

The High Street is part of Mid Croydon (the area of town centre bounded by George Street, Park Lane, the High Street, and the A232).  As outlined in the Mid Croydon Masterplan, substantial development, improved transport links, and public realm improvements are expected to deliver major change.

Following Traffic Management Advisory Committee on 12 January 2022, the The Council is making  permanent protected cycle lanes on the High Street, and Mint Walk, Croydon, improving bus operations and making further improvements to the public realm. This project is being funded by the Department for Transport Active Travel Funding which is administered by Transport for London.

Improving Bus Routing and Cycle Lanes in Croydon Town Centre High Street

As part of our improvements to High Street, Croydon, we are making changes to the road layouts to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, reduce bus journey times and improve access for local businesses and residents.

  • Improved traffic flow, including one-way systems to create better bus routing and through the Town Centre
  • Road safety improvements with new crossing at Robert Street, and moving existing zebra crossing to the end of Katharine Street at The Spread Eagle Pub
  • Improving the pedestrianised area of the High Street, by levelling the pavements and removing the gates.

We will be making these improvements between 4 January and 17 February 2023. During the works we will need to close parts of the roads - we're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause - see below for details of the closures and diversions.

4 January to 10 February: Closure of Katharine Street from Fell Road and St George’s Walk junction, to the High Street outside The Spread Eagle pub

Diversion in place:

  • Traffic travelling northbound on High Street will be diverted onto Fell Road, up the flyover and left at the gyratory to get to Katharine Street or Park Street to access St George’s Walk or Fell Road
  • Access to Scarbrook Road will still be maintained for access only (Residents and Businesses), not through traffic
  • Access to Robert Street will still be maintained

18 January to 17 February: Closure of High Street from Katharine Street to Whitgift Street

Diversion in place:

  • Traffic travelling northbound on High Street will be diverted onto Fell Road, up the flyover and left at the gyratory to get to Katharine Street or Park Street to access St George’s Walk or Fell Road
  • For traffic requiring Scarbrook Road, access will be maintained by converting Scarbrook Road to two-way working, with traffic diverted via Whitgift Street
  • Access to Robert Street will still be maintained

From 9 March: Fell Road, from Mint Walk to the Flyover, to become two-way for traffic.

As part of an Experimental Traffic Management Order (ETMO), to improve traffic flows and access to businesses, we are going to trial two-way traffic for part of Fell Road.

All businesses directly impacted by the road closures have been contacted and arrangements made to ensure their loading and access arrangements can be maintained during the works. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Transport for London (TFL) will be diverting buses and bus stops in the area will be closed during the works. See details on TfL’s website.

Parking bay suspensions will be needed in Scarbrook Road to allow for two-way traffic. Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) will be issued to vehicles parked within the suspended areas during the works hours and/or vehicles relocated.
